Have a Green 4th of July!

Have a green Independence Day by selling your iPhone!

We all know what’s there to love about the Independence Day. Aside from the overflowing fun of picnics, fireworks and barbecues, it’s that time of the year when we are all excused to run out and parade under the hot July sun. It’s also the that time of the year when everyone is mad about patriotism and freedom and people seem to think they’re free to use as much paper cups, plates, utensils, food and fireworks as they want! It’s probably the most wasteful holiday we Americans have, both environmentally and economically! So how can you make your 4th of July greener? Here are some tips on how you can help your surroundings stay free from waste and your pockets free from overspending with the help of your iPhone!

1.Have a Meat-Free Barbecue. Yes, Independence Day will never be complete without your once-a-year backyard barbecue party. More than just a tradition, barbecues bring your community, your circles of friends, or your family closer than ever by sharing some kebabs and freshly charred meat. And while a barbecue isn’t really a barbecue without the meat in it, why not try to put together some cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers and other veggies for a barbecue instead of big red steaks and pork chops? Vegetables sure are less expensive than meat! Try to look around the App Store and you’ll find a lot of app developers who sell iPhone apps like Locavore or VegOut that can suggest great vegetarian recipes.

2.Set Up a Plastic-Free Picnic. If you’re planning to organize a picnic for your family, save money and go green by using real plates rather than buying paper or plastic plates. It may sound a little weird to bring real, ceramic, breakable plates to the park but if you think about the collective cost of every bit of plastic you pack into the picnic basket, you’ll probably have enough money to buy my iPhone! Another way to save some cash is to go to picnic spots that are near public transportation so you can save on gas! Cook foods with local and organic ingredients that are also easier to pack in reusable containers. If you’re still not sure about bringing too many utensils, you can try to scour the supermarket for biodegradable plates, cups and utensils. Just make sure you throw them away responsibly!

3.Cut Down on Electricity! Yet the best way to make your pockets greener and Mother Earth happier is not to just cut down on meat and plastics, but to cut down on electricity consumption completely, even for just a day. Skip the home party you’re planning and just go out with your friends today! Sell your iPhone with a very bad battery so you can prevent yourself from consuming and wasting more electricity. Try looking for solar powered lamps or other small appliances that utilize renewable energy! You can also try to look for retailers that sell iPhone chargers that can be powered through solar energy!
