Climbing Everest With the iPhone at Hand

by Twila B. on 2012-03-22
Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay claimed the first ascent of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. This year, a thirty nine year old ski-mountaineer from Colorado, Hilaree O’Niel, will try to accomplish what the gentlemen duo did fifty nine years ago. But unlike those gentlemen, O’Niel’s journey will not be as primitive as it used to be back in the day.
In 1953, everything was heavy, bulky and just plain hard to carry. Now, we are lucky enough to be blessed with gear that is good enough to stand the cold, strong winds and chill of Mount Everest. The best part about this is that communication works fine, even at the top of that gigantic mountain. That is the reason why O’Neil will be bringing her iPhone with her on her challenging journey to reach the top of that mountain. Fifty nine years ago, Sir Edmund and Tensing used wireless walkie-talkies. This enabled the two Brits to stay in contact with each other through the entire hike. This assured they did not lose track of their destination. The problem was that these devices weighed five pounds apiece! These gadgets also used dry-cell batteries, which had to be kept warm, so they tucked in into their vests.

Now, all O’Neil would ever need to communicate with the entire world is at the tip of her fingers. As I have said, cell signal still reaches the far borders of that great mountain. Because of this, our brave mountaineer will bring her iPhone 4S to be able to connect to the world. This is awesome. I have never heard of anybody climbing Mount Everest with an iPhone with them. So at least, this is a first. Also, together with her iPhone 4S, O’Neil will also bring her iPad. This will serve as her trip journal. Comparing it again, fifty nine years ago the two Englishmen used notebooks and pencil as recording tools. Good thing O’Neil would no longer have to worry about paper flying in the air or getting wet and ruined.

All of the other tools and materials that O’Neil will be bringing have been compared to the ones that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay brought with them on their voyage. To find out more about this adventure, visit www.adventure.nationalgeographic.com.
When I was younger, I told myself I wanted to be an adventurer. I wanted to go places and discover new things and I wanted to experience the world first hand. One of these dreams was to climb Mount Everest. But unfortunately, now that I know enough because I am older, I do not think I am capable of tolerating that experience. That is why I am proud of all the people that have accomplished climbing that epic mountain, and to Hilaree O’Neil, I wish you all the luck in your quest. May you succeed in this journey, and I will share your success by heart, and that will be enough. Let your passion live!
